The Carroll High School Athletic Hall of Fame is a Texas Unincorporated Nonprofit Association that operates as an off-campus Sports Hall of Fame comprised of former student-athletes, coaches and supporters of Mary Carroll High School, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Class of 1971, inducted in 2024 into the Hall of Fame
Gutierrez was QB1 for two years for the Tigers. He got the starting nod in 1969 having never played quarterback. In his debut junior year, he led District 25-4A with an impressive 1083 passing yards and nine touchdowns which ranks him ninth all-time for quarterbacks at Carroll High School. The 1969 District 25-4A Second Team All-District quarterback was named back of the week by the Caller-Times vs Moody High School. His 3 rushing and 1 passing touchdown and 266 total yards was good enough for the honor. The 5-10, 165 lbs quarterback led the Tigers to the best offense in the district averaging 308 yards per game. He saved the best for his senior year in 1970. Gutierrez led the Tigers to a 8-2 season record and a 2nd place finish which was the best in school history at that time. Gutierrez led District 25-4A in scoring with 84 total points with at least one touchdown in every game. The senior footballer also handled the punting duties and played defensive back for the Blue and White. Post season honors included an unanimous selection to the 25-4A First Team All-District as quarterback for his efforts. Gutierrez was also named District 25-4A Second Team All-District as a defensive back. He was the only player in the district named to both the offensive and
defensive honor teams. After football his senior year, Gutierrez headed to the track where he was a top pole vaulter, clearing 13-0. Gutierrez continued playing football on scholarship at Monterrey Tech.

Class of 1962, inducted in 2018 into the Hall of Fame
‘Porter’ Williams was a starting guard on the ’60 and ’61 football teams, and he was All South Texas on the ‘61 team that had an 8-2 record. He lettered 1-year on the Tigers basketball team. He played 4-years of scholarship football at TCU and started for 3-years, and he played in the Blue-Gray All-American Bowl Game. His football coach at TCU called Porter “…one of the best football players ever…” Porter graduated from TCU with a BA in Business. He had a long career in the automobile dealership/sales industry, and in the manufactured homes industry. He loved his family, sports and playing golf with his friends. Porter has two children and three grandchildren. He passed away at age 70 in 2014 in Waco, TX.

Myers banked a bunch of game time on the football field and baseball diamond for two years. The five letter-two sport Tiger played three years on the varsity football team and two on the varsity baseball team. Myers help the Tigers to a 8-2 record his junior year, starting as a defensive back. He was one of the few juniors to be named to the 27-4A All-District First Team. The Tiger footballer played both sides of the football his senior year. He played quarterback and was named to the 27-4A Honorable Mention All-District Team and repeated as First Team All-District as a defensive back. He was the only player in the city named to both offense and defensive honor teams. The 6-2, 175 lbs quarterback was named Caller- Times Player of the Week for his effort against King High School. The Tiger went 7 for 11 passing and 111 yards and one passing touchdown, while running for another touchdown. He also did the punting duties and maintained a 43 yard average. On the baseball diamond, Myers played the hot corner for two years. The third baseman was named to the 27-4A Second Team All-District his junior year and to the First Team All-District his senior year. The 1972 Tigers represented Carroll High School in the State Tournament going 27-5 for the year. Myers posted a .434 average for the season helping the Tigers to Austin chasing a state title. Myers batting average was second best in Corpus Christi in 1972. After graduation, Myers traveled to Lubbock to play football for Texas Tech on scholarship.

Class of 1962, inducted in 2017 into the Hall of Fame
‘Lanny’ Torrence was a starting running back on the ‘59-’61 football teams. The ‘61 team had an 8-2 record in the then toughest 4-A football district in Texas. He was a sprinter on the ‘60-’62 track teams and won 1st in the District 440-relay. Lanny played scholarship football at Rice University and graduated with a double major in Chemistry and Physical Ed. He has enjoyed a long career in sales, including over 45-years in the Texas oil field service industry. Lanny lives near Victoria, TX.

Class of 1964, inducted in 2022 into the Hall of Fame
John M. Saenz was a 1st baseman and utility player for the Mary Carroll baseball team earning 3 letters from 1962 – 1964. He was also a part of the 1962 Baseball Team that was previously inducted into the Hall of Fame. He proudly served as the team manager for the 1962 Carroll 1st state ranked football team where he made life-long friends and earned a letter for his service. John proudly served in the US Army with a full tour in Vietnam and upon his return he received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Overseas Bar along with an Honorable Discharge. John received his BS Degree from the former University of Corpus Christi, now Texas A&M Corpus Christi, with majors in Biology and Chemistry. He also attended Baylor University, University of Michigan, and the Stanford University Executive Program. John spent most of his working career in the Electric Utility Industry and served in various executive positions. John also participated in numerous community services as a board member. He is the proud husband of LaRue and they share two daughters and one son plus 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
